On the evening of September 24th, 1957, President Dwight Eisenhower made a televised address to the nation explaining his decision to issue an executive order nationalizing the Arkansas National Guard and then dispatching federal troops to Little Rock, Arkansas. The intent of this action was to enforce several previous rulings by the United States Supreme Court declaring that the segregation of public schools was unconstitutional.
